An Immersive G80 M3 Configurator Experience
I created a real-time car configurator for BMW's newest M3 Competition, the G80. With just a few clicks, visitors can spec out their dream car and watch every choice come to life instantly, with customization options that match factory specifications one-to-one: paint colors, wheel styles, and body kit add-ons. Pricing aligns with 2026 MSRP, and an itemized summary is ready for users to bring directly to their nearest BMW dealership.
For the past decade, I have been a dedicated BMW enthusiast, owning BMW vehicles and spending several years working at a BMW restoration shop fresh out of university. This project was a natural confluence of my interests and passions: motion design, motorsports, and immersive web experiences.
The goal was a distinctive configurator that still felt lightweight and intuitive enough to perform seamlessly on both laptops and phones. I designed and built it end to end, from the visual presentation of the car to the interface and the design system behind it.
Seeing is Believing
A car is one of the largest purchases most people will ever make, and the journey almost always starts online. Yet most dealership websites still sell it with static photography: a handful of stock angles, generic trims, and colors that may not match the car the shopper actually wants. They are left to imagine the rest.
A real-time configurator removes the guesswork. When someone can see their exact car, in their color, on their wheels, from any angle, the purchase stops being abstract. Researchers call this psychological ownership: people value something more once it starts to feel like theirs. The more detail a person can visualize, the stronger that feeling becomes, and the more likely they are to buy.
Turning Shopping Into a Game
Configuring a car is fun in a way that reading a spec sheet never is. Every choice is a small reward: a new color, a new stance, a new number on the sticker. It plays more like building a character in a game than filling out a form, and people spend real time exploring combinations they would never have considered from a photo.
That play creates a reason to come back. As new add-ons and options become available, visitors return to see what has changed and rework their build. For BMW, every return visit keeps the car top of mind through a long purchase decision, and every finished build is a warm lead who walks into the dealership already knowing exactly what they want.
Design Principles
01
Factory Accurate
Every option matches factory specifications one-to-one, and pricing follows 2026 MSRP. A dream car is only useful if it is a real one.
02
Instant Feedback
Every choice appears on the car the moment it is made. No reloads, no waiting, so curiosity never gets interrupted.
03
Light on Any Device
Built to run seamlessly on laptops and phones, because so much car shopping starts on a phone, long before a dealership visit.
04
Built for the Handoff
An itemized summary turns an online build into a conversation at the dealership, connecting digital curiosity to an in-person sale.
The Configurator
Interaction
The interface is built around one idea: the car is always the hero. Controls stay compact and out of the way while the G80 fills the screen, and every change to paint, wheels, or body kit shows up on the car immediately, with the price breakdown updating alongside it.
Options are grouped the way people actually think about a car, from the big decisions like color down to the finishing details, so exploring feels like a natural progression rather than a checklist.
The Design System
System
Behind the configurator is a dedicated design system: typography, color, spacing, and components defined once and used everywhere. It keeps an interface with dozens of options consistent and easy to extend, so new paints, wheels, and packages can be added without redesigning the experience.
That is what turns the configurator into a platform that can keep growing, and what makes the promise of new options worth coming back for. Explore it live below.
Why It Works
Takeaway
A configurator is not a gimmick layered on top of a car website. It is the most direct way to close the gap between wanting a car and buying one. When shoppers can see exactly what they would drive, the decision becomes personal, and the path to the dealership gets shorter.
By pairing factory-accurate options with real-time visuals and a game-like loop of discovery, the experience gives people a reason to explore, a reason to return, and a clear next step when they are ready. It is the closest you can get without seeing the car in person.
